Aldactone for men: uses, effects and safety

Aldactone is a brand of spironolactone. It changes how the kidneys handle salt and water and also reduces androgen activity. A clinician may use it for conditions involving fluid retention or blood pressure, while its hormone effects can influence whether it suits a particular patient.

Because spironolactone can block androgen effects, some men notice breast tenderness or enlargement, reduced libido, or changes in sexual function. These effects are not experienced by everyone, but they deserve discussion if they are troublesome or unexpected.

Its diuretic action may increase urination and contribute to dizziness, especially after standing. It can also raise potassium, so kidney health, other medicines and potassium-containing supplements matter when a clinician decides whether and how to prescribe it.

Take only the prescribed dose and do not change or stop it without checking with the prescriber. Tell the care team about kidney or adrenal problems, dehydration, planned surgery, and every prescription medicine, pain reliever, supplement or salt substitute you use.

Attend requested blood tests, which may check potassium and kidney function. If you become unwell with vomiting, diarrhoea or poor fluid intake, contact the prescriber for advice because dehydration can change the medicine's effects.

Seek urgent care for fainting, severe weakness, marked confusion, trouble breathing, a very slow or irregular heartbeat, or swelling of the face or throat. These symptoms can signal a serious reaction or a disturbance in fluid or electrolytes.

Contact the prescriber promptly for persistent dizziness, muscle weakness, reduced urination, new breast changes, or sexual side effects that concern you. Do not try to correct possible potassium changes by altering supplements on your own.

Ask what benefit is expected for your condition, which side effects are most relevant to you, whether any current medicine increases potassium, and when blood tests are due. If hormone-related effects are a concern, ask what alternatives could meet the same treatment goal.
