Spironolactone in Dermatology

Spironolactone is a prescription tablet that may be used to manage hormonal patterns of acne.

It was developed as a diuretic, meaning it can increase urine production. In dermatology, its anti-androgen effect can be relevant when androgen activity contributes to excess oil production and acne in an appropriate patient.

Spironolactone blocks the effects of aldosterone in the kidneys and can affect fluid balance and potassium. It also reduces androgen activity in certain tissues. These actions explain both its dermatology use and why a prescriber reviews your medical history, medicines and, when needed, blood tests.

It is an oral medicine rather than a spot treatment. A dermatologist may combine it with a topical acne medicine so that different parts of acne care are addressed together.

A clinician may consider spironolactone for acne with a hormonal pattern, including breakouts that fluctuate with menstrual cycles or continue despite topical care. The decision is individual: acne severity, other health conditions, current medicines, contraception and pregnancy plans all affect whether it is suitable.

It is not a treatment to start from a leftover supply or from someone else’s prescription. The prescriber chooses the dose and reviews response and tolerability over follow-up visits.

Acne management may include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, antibiotics, combined hormonal contraception or isotretinoin, depending on the situation. A dermatologist can select options around your acne type, skin sensitivity, medical history and reproductive plans.

Take the tablet exactly as prescribed and do not alter the dose on your own. Tell your clinician about dizziness, muscle weakness, unusual tiredness, palpitations, vomiting, menstrual changes or breast tenderness. They can decide whether symptoms need a medication review or testing.

Bring an updated list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter painkillers, vitamins, herbal products and salt substitutes to each review. This helps the prescriber identify interactions that could affect potassium or blood pressure.

Spironolactone requires prescribing oversight. It may not be suitable for people with severe kidney problems, high potassium or certain hormone-related conditions. Contact urgent medical care for severe weakness, fainting, chest symptoms, severe shortness of breath or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
