AIS on a Pap smear: what the result means

AIS means adenocarcinoma in situ. The abnormal cells are described as being confined to the surface glandular tissue of the cervix. A clinician normally confirms what is present by examining the cervix and collecting tissue for laboratory assessment.

A Pap smear collects cells rather than removing a complete area of tissue. Because glandular abnormalities can sit higher in the cervical canal or occur in separate areas, the cell result cannot show the full extent by itself.

AIS is a precancerous change, not the same as invasive cervical cancer. Further assessment checks whether the screening interpretation is confirmed and whether any abnormal cells extend deeper into tissue.

Arrange the recommended gynaecology or colposcopy appointment without waiting for symptoms. Bring the exact screening report and any previous cervical screening or HPV results. The specialist may examine the cervix, take samples, and discuss a procedure that removes a larger piece of cervical tissue to clarify the diagnosis and margins.

Management is individual. Your wishes about future pregnancy, the location of the abnormal cells, tissue findings, and whether the edges of removed tissue are clear can all affect the plan. Keep every follow-up appointment even if a procedure has already removed visible abnormal tissue.

Contact the treating team promptly if you develop unexpected bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, unusual watery or blood-stained discharge, or pelvic pain. These symptoms have several possible causes, but they warrant assessment rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

After a biopsy or cervical procedure, follow the discharge instructions. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or worsening pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge.

Ask where the abnormal glandular cells were found, which examination or tissue test is next, and when results should be available. You can also ask how each management option may affect fertility, what the tissue margins mean, and what follow-up schedule applies after treatment.
