Stretch marks after delivery: what to expect

Short answer

Stretch marks after delivery are harmless skin scars that often soften in colour and texture gradually, although they may remain visible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medical concern
Typical stretch marks are harmless.
Natural change
Colour and texture can soften gradually.
Treatment aim
Improve appearance rather than erase every mark.

The short answer

They do not need treatment unless their appearance or texture bothers you. Moisturiser can improve comfort, but no cream can reliably erase established marks.

Why stretch marks remain

Stretch marks form when rapid stretching and hormonal influences alter supportive fibres within the skin. After pregnancy they may appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, or buttocks. Newer marks can look pink, red, purple, or brown depending on skin tone; older ones commonly become paler and slightly indented.

Their presence does not mean the skin is unhealthy or that recovery has gone wrong. Genetics, skin characteristics, and the pace of body change influence their development, so they are not a sign that a particular moisturising routine was missed.

Skin care and treatment choices

Apply a plain moisturiser if the area feels dry or itchy, use sun protection on exposed skin to reduce contrast, and allow the skin time to settle after pregnancy. Avoid harsh scrubbing, which may irritate the surface without changing the deeper scar.

Procedures such as microneedling, fractional laser treatment, or RF microneedling may be discussed once your clinician has assessed the marks, skin tone, tendency to pigment, and healing history. Treatment generally aims to soften texture or colour difference rather than remove every trace. Mention breastfeeding and any plans for another pregnancy because they can affect timing and product selection.

When a skin check is worthwhile

Book an assessment if marks appear suddenly without a clear period of skin stretching, are accompanied by easy bruising or muscle weakness, or develop while you are using a steroid medicine. These details can help a clinician decide whether another health issue or medicine effect needs consideration.

Seek prompt care when the skin is hot, increasingly painful, draining fluid, or associated with fever, because those features are not typical of uncomplicated stretch marks. An itchy rash spreading beyond the lines also deserves examination as it may be a separate condition.

Planning a consultation

Ask which feature the proposed procedure is expected to improve, how your skin tone changes the risk of pigment alteration, what recovery will involve, and how many sessions might be considered. Also clarify which products should be avoided during breastfeeding and how results will be assessed.

Questions people ask

Will stretch marks disappear after delivery?

They may fade and become less noticeable, but established marks can remain because they are changes within the deeper skin.

When can I consider a procedure?

Timing depends on skin recovery, breastfeeding, future pregnancy plans, and the chosen procedure. A dermatologist can tailor the timing after examining your skin.
