Stretch marks after giving birth

Short answer
Stretch marks after birth are scar-like lines created as skin connective tissue adapts to stretching and hormonal change during pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Nature
- Stretch marks are a form of dermal scarring and are not contagious.
- Natural course
- Colour and texture often soften after pregnancy.
- Treatment aim
- Procedures seek improvement rather than complete removal.
The short answer
They are harmless and often soften in colour and texture, although they may not disappear completely. Moisturisers can relieve dryness or itch but cannot reliably remove established marks.
What the lines represent
Newer stretch marks may look pink, red, purple or darker than the surrounding skin, depending on skin tone. With time they often become paler, less raised or less noticeable. Common locations after pregnancy include the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs and buttocks.
The marks are not a sign that the skin was poorly cared for. Family tendency, hormonal influences and the way the skin stretched all affect their development, so prevention products cannot promise that they will not form.
Care for comfort and consider timing
Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser when the skin feels dry or itchy, avoid vigorous scrubbing and protect exposed areas from sunlight to reduce contrast with surrounding skin. Allow recovery after delivery before deciding whether appearance still troubles you.
Procedures such as microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling or fractional laser may improve texture or colour for selected patients, but they do not erase every mark. Choice depends on skin tone, whether marks are new or mature, tendency to pigment or scar, breastfeeding status and plans for another pregnancy.
Changes that are not typical stretch marks
Arrange medical review if the area is hot, increasingly painful, weeping, blistered or accompanied by a spreading rash. Sudden widespread marks without a clear stretching trigger, easy bruising, muscle weakness or long-term steroid use also warrants assessment for another cause.
Get urgent help for a rapidly worsening rash with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever or severe illness, rather than treating it as a cosmetic concern.
Questions before a procedure
Ask which feature the treatment aims to change, how your skin tone affects the risk of pigment alteration, and what recovery looks like. Tell the clinician about breastfeeding, pregnancy plans, keloid scarring, active rashes, medicines and any recent procedures in the same area.

Questions people ask
Will moisturiser remove postpartum stretch marks?
Moisturiser supports comfort and reduces dryness, but established marks lie deeper than the skin surface and are unlikely to be removed by moisturising alone.
Can stretch marks be treated while breastfeeding?
Suitability depends on the proposed procedure or product and the area being treated. Tell the clinician you are breastfeeding before using prescription creams or scheduling treatment.
Should treatment wait until after another pregnancy?
Another pregnancy may create new marks or stretch treated skin. Discuss your priorities and pregnancy plans when deciding whether to proceed now or later.
