Adductor Tendon Strain

Short answer

An adductor tendon strain is an acute groin injury managed by protecting painful tissue before gradually rebuilding strength and movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Onset
Often sudden during a forceful movement
Pain test
Pulling the leg inward may reproduce symptoms
Return requirement
Strength plus task-specific movement

The short answer

The first phase aims to avoid further overload while maintaining comfortable daily movement. Rehabilitation then exposes the muscle-tendon unit to increasing resistance, speed and sporting demands. Severity and functional progress influence the timeline more than the injury name by itself.

What the injury affects

Adductor tendons connect the inner-thigh muscles to bone around the pelvis and thigh. A forceful stretch or contraction during sprinting, slipping, kicking or cutting can injure tendon fibres or the nearby muscle-tendon junction. Adductor tendon strain commonly presents with sudden inner-groin pain, tenderness and pain when the leg pulls inward.

The term does not show the exact injury site or severity. Examination may compare adductor strength, hip motion, walking and sport-related movements. A scan can be considered when the findings suggest a substantial tear or when the cause remains uncertain.

Steps that support healing

Stop the movement that caused sharp pain and initially avoid aggressive stretching or forceful side-to-side work. Once walking is comfortable, controlled adductor contractions can introduce load without sudden speed. Resistance, range and complexity can then rise in stages, supported by hip, gluteal and trunk exercises.

Before unrestricted sport, practise acceleration, braking, cutting and kicking as relevant. Monitor how the groin responds after training as well as during it. Returning only because tenderness has eased can leave a gap between basic comfort and the force required in competition.

When to get the injury checked

Seek prompt assessment if a snap was followed by marked weakness, bruising or difficulty bearing weight. Urgent care is appropriate for severe testicular pain, a painful groin lump, numbness, fever, abdominal pain or visible deformity. A routine appointment is sensible when symptoms persist, keep recurring, or prevent a steady return to ordinary walking and exercise.

Points to clarify with your clinician

Ask whether the tender structure is the tendon, muscle-tendon junction or another part of the groin. Request clear guidance on acceptable exercise symptoms, criteria for increasing resistance and the movement tests required before returning to practice or competition.

Questions people ask

Is an adductor tendon strain different from tendinopathy?

A strain is usually an acute fibre injury, whereas tendinopathy more often reflects persistent load-related tendon pain. Assessment helps distinguish them when symptoms overlap.

When can strengthening begin?

Gentle loading can often start once it can be performed without sharp pain. Resistance and movement range should increase progressively rather than jumping straight to heavy or fast work.

Can I return when walking no longer hurts?

Comfortable walking is useful progress, but sport places much higher demands on the adductors. Running, direction changes and relevant skills should also be tested gradually.
