Dry mouth alone does not confirm dehydration. Look at the wider pattern, including thirst, dark urine, reduced urination, dizziness, headache and unusual tiredness. Vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, strenuous activity and hot weather can add to fluid loss.

A stimulant can make someone feel less hungry or too focused to pause for drinks. It may also increase sweating in some people. Dehydration develops when fluid loss exceeds replacement, so the setting matters: outdoor heat, exercise and a stomach illness can turn a mild intake problem into a more significant one.

Dark urine can accompany dehydration, while cloudy urine, painful urination, fever or pain in the side may point to a urinary problem that needs separate assessment. Symptoms rather than urine colour alone should guide the response.

Drink regularly across the day instead of waiting for strong thirst. Pair drinks with meals, medication times and breaks, and carry water when outside. During heavy sweating or a digestive illness, a pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral rehydration solution is appropriate.

If symptoms repeatedly follow the medication, record the dose time, fluid intake, activity, temperature exposure and urination. Share the pattern with the prescriber. Continue the prescribed dose unless a clinician advises a change.

Get prompt advice if dark urine or reduced urination persists despite drinking, or if dizziness, vomiting, diarrhoea or fever makes replacement difficult. Painful urination, cloudy urine with urinary symptoms, or pain in the back or side also warrants assessment.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, collapse, severe weakness, inability to drink, very little or no urine, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or hot skin with altered behaviour after heat exposure. Move out of the heat and begin cooling while help is arranged.

Describe when symptoms occur and ask whether another medicine or health condition could affect fluid balance. Confirm a suitable hydration approach if you have kidney or heart problems, because your recommended intake may need to be individualised.
