Acute mastitis in cattle: a human health clarification

In cattle, mastitis means inflammation of mammary tissue, commonly involving infection entering through the teat canal. The organism, severity, stage of lactation and animal's general condition influence veterinary decisions. Changes may affect one section of the udder even when the others look normal.

Human breast mastitis is a separate clinical problem. Although both involve inflamed mammary tissue, medicines, doses, testing and milk-handling decisions are not interchangeable between people and animals.

Contact a veterinarian and describe the animal's behaviour, appetite, temperature if safely measured, udder changes and the appearance of the milk. Follow established farm hygiene and isolation procedures while waiting for advice. Keep a clear record of any product already given.

Do not use human antibiotics, leftover veterinary medicines or home remedies. A veterinarian may collect a milk sample and decide on supportive care, antimicrobial treatment or another intervention. Follow their directions about milking, discarded milk, withdrawal periods and whether milk can enter the food supply.

Seek urgent veterinary help if the animal is weak, unable to stand, not eating or drinking, breathing abnormally, severely dehydrated, or has a cold, discoloured or markedly swollen udder. Rapid deterioration, reduced responsiveness or signs of shock also require emergency advice.

If a person develops breast pain, redness, fever or flu-like symptoms, they need guidance from a human healthcare professional. Veterinary instructions are not appropriate for treating a person's breast symptoms.

Ask the veterinarian whether a milk sample is needed, how to provide fluids and comfort safely, which milking precautions apply, and what signs would trigger a return visit. For symptoms in a person, tell the clinician whether breastfeeding is involved and ask whether breast examination, treatment or lactation support is needed.
