During severe spinning, rest in a safe position, change posture slowly and take small sips of fluid if nausea allows. Keep floors clear, use handrails and arrange help with tasks that involve stairs, heat or sharp tools. Avoid alcohol and do not drive while dizzy or while taking a sedating medicine.

As the acute sickness settles, gentle everyday movement usually helps the balance system recalibrate. Follow the clinician's advice about reducing symptom-relief medicines and starting exercises; pushing through a fall risk is not useful. Review is appropriate if symptoms fail to ease, recur, or leave continuing hearing difficulty.

Seek emergency care if vertigo comes with facial weakness, one-sided limb weakness or numbness, speech difficulty, new double vision, collapse, severe loss of coordination or a sudden intense headache. Obtain same-day medical help for sudden hearing loss, high fever, worsening ear pain, swelling behind the ear, persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down.

Confirm how and when to take any prescribed medicine, whether it may cause sleepiness, and when it should be stopped. Ask whether you need a hearing test, which home movements are suitable, what would justify a specialist referral, and what signs mean the original diagnosis should be reconsidered.
