Acute acid reflux: relief and warning signs

How the structures involved in Acid Reflux differ from normal

Short answer

Acute acid reflux is a sudden episode of stomach contents moving into the oesophagus, often causing burning behind the breastbone or a sour taste.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical sensations
Burning behind the breastbone or a sour taste
Immediate position
Stay upright rather than lying flat after eating
Safety point
New severe chest discomfort should not be assumed to be reflux

The short answer

An occasional episode may settle with posture and meal adjustments or a pharmacist-recommended remedy. New, intense or unusual chest discomfort needs careful assessment because heart and other conditions can feel similar.

Why reflux flares

A muscular valve normally limits backward flow from the stomach. Reflux occurs when stomach contents pass through it and irritate the oesophagus. Symptoms may follow a large or rich meal, lying down soon after eating, alcohol, smoking, tight clothing or certain medicines. A hiatus hernia and increased abdominal pressure can also contribute.

Acid reflux can present with heartburn, sour fluid in the mouth, belching, throat irritation or cough. The sensation may worsen when bending or lying flat. Chest symptoms alone cannot confirm reflux, and their severity does not reliably identify the cause.

Settling an episode

Remain upright and loosen tight clothing around the waist. Avoid lying flat after the meal, and choose smaller, simpler meals until symptoms settle. Notice whether a particular food, drink or medicine repeatedly precedes episodes rather than excluding many foods at once.

A pharmacist can advise whether an antacid or an alginate-type product is suitable and how to separate it from other medicines. Mention pregnancy, kidney disease and everything else you take. Do not repeatedly self-treat worsening symptoms or stop a prescribed medicine that you suspect is contributing without speaking to its prescriber.

Warning signs that need assessment

Book a clinician review if reflux keeps returning, wakes you from sleep, is becoming harder to control, or comes with difficulty or pain when swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, ongoing cough, black stools or blood in vomit.

Call emergency services for new or severe chest pressure or tightness, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or discomfort spreading to the arm, jaw, back or shoulder. Do not assume these symptoms are indigestion, and do not drive yourself to emergency care.

What to discuss if episodes recur

Describe the location and timing of discomfort, its relationship to meals and posture, swallowing problems, cough, night symptoms and medicines used. Ask whether a medicine review, a longer treatment course or tests for another digestive cause are appropriate.

Questions people ask

What can I do during a sudden reflux episode?

Stay upright, loosen tight clothing, avoid more rich food or alcohol, and ask a pharmacist about a suitable short-term remedy. Seek help if the symptoms are severe or unusual.

How can I tell reflux pain from heart-related chest pain?

The sensations can overlap, so symptoms alone may not separate them safely. New or severe pressure, breathlessness, sweating, faintness or spreading discomfort requires emergency assessment.

When should repeated heartburn be reviewed?

Arrange review when episodes keep returning, disturb sleep, resist pharmacy treatment, or occur with swallowing difficulty, vomiting, weight loss, black stools or blood.
