Acid reflux and rhinitis symptoms

Rhinitis involves inflammation inside the nose and commonly presents with sneezing, nasal itching, a blocked or runny nose, and mucus draining towards the throat. Acid reflux can present with heartburn, sour taste, regurgitation, hoarseness, throat clearing, or cough, sometimes after food or when lying down. Throat symptoms alone cannot reliably identify which condition is responsible. Both may be present, and dry air, infection, asthma, smoking, or medication effects can create similar complaints.

Note whether symptoms follow meals, bedtime, dust, fragrances, weather changes, or animal exposure. For a reflux pattern, smaller evening meals and staying upright after eating may help. For nasal symptoms, reducing a known exposure and using saline nasal spray or rinse may provide relief; prepare rinses only with sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water. Avoid repeatedly adding reflux, allergy, and cold products without checking their ingredients, because side effects and duplicate medicines can confuse the picture.

Seek emergency care for serious breathing difficulty, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, blue or grey lips, or chest tightness with sweating or spreading pain. Arrange a clinical review for trouble swallowing, coughing up blood, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, a persistent one-sided blocked nose, recurrent nosebleeds, or cough and hoarseness that do not settle. Urgency comes from these warning features, not from whether reflux or rhinitis seems more likely.

Ask which features point towards nasal inflammation, reflux, asthma, infection, or a medicine effect. Discuss whether a focused treatment trial is appropriate, how improvement will be judged, and when to stop or change it. Mention wheeze, seasonal symptoms, regurgitation, swallowing changes, snoring, and every nasal or stomach product already used.
