The result is thicker, darker, velvety skin, usually in folds. Appearance alone confirms neither diabetes nor any other specific cause; the clinical context determines what should be investigated.

With insulin resistance, the body produces more insulin to keep blood glucose controlled, and that signal can encourage skin cells to multiply. This pattern may accompany weight-related metabolic changes, prediabetes, diabetes, or polycystic ovary syndrome. Thyroid and other endocrine disorders can sometimes be relevant.

Certain corticosteroids, hormonal medicines, and other prescribed drugs may contribute. Some people develop acanthosis nigricans through a family tendency, including at younger ages. Much less often, a rapid and extensive adult-onset pattern is linked with an internal cancer, particularly when the mouth is involved or systemic symptoms occur.

Have a clinician confirm that the skin change is acanthosis nigricans rather than dermatitis, frictional pigmentation, infection, or another disorder. Be ready to describe when it began, how quickly it changed, which sites are affected, and whether relatives have similar skin. Share all medicines and supplements without stopping a prescribed treatment on your own.

Depending on the history and examination, the clinician may check glucose regulation or investigate hormonal clues. Management targets the identified contributor where possible. Skin-directed options can reduce roughness or visible pigment, yet they do not correct insulin resistance or another internal cause.

Seek prompt review for patches that begin suddenly, expand rapidly, become widespread, or affect the lips or inside the mouth. Unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal discomfort, difficulty swallowing, pronounced weakness, marked thirst, or frequent urination also call for timely care. Urgency follows these features, not the darkness of the patch by itself.
