Abreva and angular cheilitis

Abreva is a brand of docosanol intended for herpes cold sores on the lips or nearby skin. Angular cheilitis affects the corners of the mouth and may involve moisture, irritation, yeast, bacteria, or an underlying health issue. Correctly identifying the problem matters before choosing a cream.

Angular cheilitis commonly presents with soreness, redness, scaling, and splits where the upper and lower lips meet. Saliva pooling, lip licking, dentures, dry skin, or irritation can weaken this area. Infection may then contribute.

A cold sore more often begins with tingling or burning followed by grouped blisters that crust. Appearance alone is not always enough to distinguish them, and both problems can occur near the mouth. A clinician can examine the pattern and decide whether testing or a targeted medicine is needed.
