Safe home care for angular cheilitis

Short answer
Useful home care focuses on keeping mouth corners clean and dry, applying a bland barrier, and avoiding licking or irritating products.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Gentle option
- Plain petroleum jelly on external skin
- Avoid
- Acids, essential oils and fragranced products
- Get assessed
- If cracks persist, recur, spread or discharge
The short answer
These measures protect damaged skin but do not replace treatment for yeast, bacteria, allergy, denture problems or a health condition. Painful, spreading, persistent or recurrent cracks deserve assessment.
What home care can achieve
Angular cheilitis develops where movement and moisture repeatedly stress a small skin fold. Reducing saliva contact and friction gives the barrier a better environment for repair. It does not show whether infection is present or why the fold keeps becoming wet.
Kitchen ingredients such as lemon juice, vinegar, bicarbonate mixtures, garlic and essential oils can sting or cause contact dermatitis on split skin. Flavoured or fragranced lip balms may also prolong irritation even when they feel soothing at first.
A simple home routine
Clean the corners gently with lukewarm water, then pat them fully dry with a soft clean cloth. Spread a thin layer of plain petroleum jelly over the external cracks, particularly after meals and before sleeping. Drink in a way that limits dribbling if possible, and resist licking or biting loose skin.
Use mild toothpaste and pause recently introduced cosmetics if they seem irritating. Do not share lip products. Avoid leftover prescription creams, and do not use steroid cream by itself unless a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate.
Limits of self-care
Arrange an assessment if the skin fails to improve with careful protection, repeatedly splits, becomes increasingly sore, or develops pus, marked crusting or a spreading rash. Also mention mouth soreness, white oral patches, ill-fitting dentures, fatigue, digestive symptoms or frequent infections, as these can guide evaluation.
Urgent help is appropriate for fast-growing swelling, fever with spreading facial redness, inability to drink, or any breathing or swallowing difficulty.
Discussing self-care with a clinician
Bring a list or photographs of products already applied and ask which should be stopped. Useful questions include whether infection is visible, whether a swab or other check is warranted, and how to combine prescribed medicine with a protective ointment without diluting or misapplying it.

Questions people ask
Is petroleum jelly suitable for angular cheilitis?
It can act as a protective barrier against saliva and friction. It does not treat an infection or an underlying medical contributor.
Can I use coconut oil or essential oils?
Plant oils are not reliably non-irritating, and essential oils can trigger burning or dermatitis on broken skin. A plain fragrance-free barrier is a more predictable choice.
Should I peel away the dry skin?
No. Pulling flakes can reopen the fissure and cause bleeding. Let loose skin separate naturally while protecting the area.
