What an abnormal PET scan can mean

The report must be interpreted alongside the CT images, your history, examination, and other tests. Infection, inflammation, healing tissue, normal organ activity, and some cancers can all affect how the radiotracer appears.

PET imaging maps where a radiotracer accumulates. A brighter area may reflect cells using more glucose than nearby tissue, while reduced or unexpected activity can also be relevant. Location, shape, intensity, and comparison with the CT component help the reporting specialist judge whether a finding needs attention.

The wording may describe a finding as avid, indeterminate, suspicious, or compatible with a particular process. These terms express an imaging interpretation rather than a tissue diagnosis. Comparison with earlier scans can show whether an area is new, stable, shrinking, or changing after treatment.

Arrange a review with the clinician who ordered the scan. Bring the written report and ensure the images and any previous scans are available. Depending on the pattern and your clinical situation, the next step may be observation, repeat imaging, a different scan, blood tests, or a biopsy.

Before assuming that every highlighted area is disease, ask whether recent surgery, radiotherapy, vaccination, infection, strenuous muscle use, or blood-glucose variation could have influenced the image. Do not change cancer treatment on the basis of report wording without the treating team’s interpretation.

The scan label itself is not usually an emergency. Seek urgent medical care for severe breathing difficulty, new weakness on one side, a seizure, confusion, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening pain. Otherwise, contact the ordering clinic promptly if the report recommends urgent assessment or you develop a new persistent symptom.

Ask which exact area was abnormal, whether it matches a change on CT, how it compares with earlier imaging, and what non-cancer explanations fit the pattern. Also ask what test could clarify the finding, when follow-up should occur, and whether any current medicine or treatment should continue unchanged.
