What an abnormal cystoscopy can mean

Short answer

An abnormal cystoscopy means the clinician saw a change inside the urethra or bladder that may need further assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Structures viewed
Urethra and bladder lining
Common next test
Biopsy when an area of tissue needs identification
Urgent warning
Inability to pass urine, fever, heavy bleeding, or clots

The short answer

Possible findings include inflammation, bleeding, a stone, scar-related narrowing, an enlarged-prostate impression, or an area of tissue that looks unusual. Appearance alone may not establish the cause, so urine tests, imaging, or a biopsy can be recommended.

How the finding is interpreted

During cystoscopy, a thin viewing instrument passes through the urethra so the clinician can inspect its lining and the inside of the bladder. The report may note the finding's position, surface, colour, size, whether it bleeds, and whether urine flow appears obstructed. These details guide the next test but do not replace tissue analysis when diagnosis remains uncertain.

An unusual area can be non-cancerous, precancerous, or cancerous. If tissue was removed, the pathology result determines what cells are present and helps shape any further care. Urine cytology may also look for abnormal cells shed into urine, while imaging can assess structures beyond the bladder lining.

Steps after an abnormal cystoscopy

Confirm whether a biopsy was taken, when the pathology result is expected, and who will explain it. Follow the procedure team's instructions about fluids, activity, medicines, and urinary symptoms. If you take a blood-thinning medicine, use only the personalised stop-and-restart plan provided by your treating clinicians.

Mild burning or a small amount of blood can occur after cystoscopy, but it should follow the recovery pattern described in your discharge advice. Record worsening symptoms and contact the named service if recovery is not progressing as expected. Do not start leftover antibiotics because they can delay appropriate urine testing and treatment.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent assessment if you cannot pass urine, develop fever or shaking chills, have worsening lower abdominal or back pain, or pass heavy blood or clots. These symptoms can point to urinary retention, infection, or significant bleeding. Severe weakness, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness calls for emergency help.

Questions to take to follow-up

Ask the clinician to name and show the location of the abnormal area, explain the leading possibilities, and say whether it was completely removed or only sampled. Find out which result will confirm the diagnosis, whether another cystoscopy is planned, and whom to call if bleeding, pain, or urinary difficulty increases.

Questions people ask

Does an abnormal cystoscopy confirm bladder cancer?

No. Several benign changes can look abnormal, and suspicious tissue generally needs pathology assessment to identify it.

Why would a biopsy be taken during cystoscopy?

A biopsy allows a pathologist to examine the cells and distinguish inflammation or other benign change from precancerous or cancerous tissue.

Is blood in the urine expected afterwards?

A small amount may occur, but heavy bleeding, clots, worsening bleeding, or difficulty passing urine needs prompt medical assessment.
