Bleeding for 2 Weeks After a Miscarriage

How the structures involved in Miscarriage differ from normal

Short answer

Bleeding may continue for two weeks after a miscarriage, but persistent, worsening, or heavy flow needs clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Track
Record pad changes, clots, pain, temperature, and whether flow is easing.
Assessment
Ongoing bleeding may require testing to check for retained tissue or infection.
Emergency
Rapidly heavy flow, severe pain, fainting, or breathing difficulty needs immediate care.

The short answer

Flow often changes as pregnancy tissue passes and the uterus empties. It may lessen, become brown, and then stop. A pad is useful for tracking the amount; colour by itself does not show whether the miscarriage is complete.

Why bleeding may continue

The uterus contracts to expel blood and tissue, which can cause bleeding and cramping. Continuing symptoms can also occur when pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus or an infection develops.

If the pregnancy location was never confirmed, clinicians also need to consider ectopic pregnancy. Bleeding patterns cannot distinguish these possibilities. Assessment may involve an examination, a pregnancy test or blood tests, and transvaginal ultrasound.

How to monitor and recover

Contact the service managing your miscarriage if bleeding has continued for two weeks. Tell them whether it is getting lighter or heavier, how often you change pads, where pain is felt, and whether there is fever, discharge, dizziness, or a positive pregnancy test.

Follow the personalised plan for follow-up testing. Use pads rather than tampons while bleeding, take only pain relief suitable for you, drink enough fluid, and resume activity gradually. If tissue remains, the choices may include further observation, medicine, or a procedure.

Symptoms needing urgent help

Get emergency care for bleeding that is rapidly soaking pads, severe or increasing abdominal pain, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, confusion, marked dizziness, pronounced weakness, or breathing difficulty. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.

Obtain same-day medical advice for fever, chills, unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge, worsening pelvic tenderness, or bleeding that becomes heavier after settling. These features can indicate infection or retained tissue even when the initial miscarriage was managed at home.

What to discuss at follow-up

Ask how completion will be confirmed, whether you need ultrasound or blood tests, and what amount of bleeding should change your care plan. You may also want guidance on anaemia symptoms, contraception, trying for pregnancy again, and emotional-support services.

Questions people ask

What should you know about 2 week miscarriage bleeding?

Bleeding can still be present, but it should be discussed with the team managing your care, particularly if it is not easing. Heavy flow, severe pain, fainting, or marked dizziness needs emergency assessment.

Can brown bleeding mean the miscarriage is complete?

Brown blood often represents older blood, but colour cannot confirm completion. Follow-up testing or imaging may be needed according to your care plan.

What treatments are used if tissue remains?

Depending on symptoms and scan findings, a clinician may recommend continued observation, medicine that helps the uterus empty, or surgical management.
