Short answer

Occasional soft snoring during a cold can settle, but frequent or laboured snoring in an 11-month-old deserves medical review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

The useful clues are whether it happens only with congestion or on most nights, and whether sleep includes pauses, gasping, restless movement or visible effort to breathe.

Why a baby may snore

Snoring is the sound of air moving through a narrowed upper airway during sleep. Temporary nasal swelling from a cold can make it louder. Persistent congestion, allergic rhinitis or enlarged tissues behind the nose may also narrow airflow.

Obstructive sleep apnoea can present with repeated pauses, snorts or gasps, mouth breathing, restless sleep and unusual daytime irritability or sleepiness. Snoring alone cannot confirm the cause, so the breathing pattern matters more than loudness.

What to observe and do

Note how many nights the sound occurs, whether the baby has a blocked nose, and whether their chest or neck pulls in. A short recording taken while the child is safely asleep can help a clinician understand the sound and breathing pattern.

If nasal congestion is present, saline drops and gentle suction before sleep may improve airflow. Keep the sleep surface flat and firm, without pillows, wedges or positioners. Reduce exposure to tobacco smoke, incense and strong fragrance, which can irritate the airway.

When snoring needs assessment

Seek emergency help if breathing stops and does not promptly restart, the lips or face turn blue or grey, the baby is struggling for each breath, or the child becomes limp or difficult to wake.

Book a medical appointment if snoring occurs regularly, sleep includes pauses or gasping, breathing is persistently noisy while awake, feeding is difficult, or growth and daytime alertness are concerns. The clinician may examine the nose, mouth and throat and decide whether specialist assessment is appropriate.

Prepare for the appointment

Ask whether the recording suggests airway obstruction, whether nasal inflammation needs treatment, and whether an ear, nose and throat or sleep assessment is indicated. Share the pattern across well days and cold days, sleeping position, mouth breathing, waking, feeding changes and any family history of sleep-related breathing problems.

Questions people ask

Is snoring during a cold expected?

Nasal swelling during a cold can temporarily cause snoring. Seek review if it continues after congestion clears or comes with pauses, gasping, feeding difficulty or laboured breathing.

Should I wake my baby when they snore?

Soft snoring without breathing difficulty does not automatically require waking. Intervene and seek urgent help if breathing stops, colour changes, or the baby struggles to breathe or is hard to rouse.
