Scalp Cooling System

A scalp cooling system uses a fitted cap connected to a cooling unit. The cap circulates a cooled liquid or air around the scalp before, during and after selected chemotherapy medicines. Cooling narrows small blood vessels in the scalp and reduces the amount of medicine reaching hair follicles. The aim is to reduce hair shedding; it does not treat the cancer or replace chemotherapy.

The cap is fitted before chemotherapy begins so the scalp can cool in advance. It stays in place while the medicine is given and for a period afterwards, based on the treatment plan. A close fit is needed, so the first minutes may feel very cold or tight. Staff check comfort, scalp contact and general wellbeing throughout the visit. Hair care advice may include gentle washing and avoiding unnecessary heat or pulling.

Scalp cooling does not prevent hair loss for everyone, and results depend on the chemotherapy medicines, dose schedule, cap fit and individual response. It may not be offered for every cancer or treatment plan. Some people cannot tolerate the cold or pressure, and a cap may be difficult to use when the scalp is tender. Discuss the expected benefit and other hair-loss support before starting.

If cooling is unsuitable or you prefer not to use it, the team can discuss gentle hair care, head coverings, wigs, scarves and emotional support. These options do not change chemotherapy, but can help with comfort, appearance and planning. Ask about fitting a wig before treatment if that would make the transition easier.

Scalp cooling can make a chemotherapy visit longer because cooling continues after the medicine is finished. Bring warm clothing and tell staff if the cap feels painful, slips or causes a severe headache. Hair may still become thinner or shed in patches, so plan the support that feels right for you rather than waiting for a particular result.

Tell the team about scalp conditions, wounds, severe cold sensitivity or symptoms that make cooling difficult. Staff can adjust the cap or pause it when needed. Report persistent scalp pain, skin changes, dizziness or feeling unwell during or after a session. The oncology team decides whether cooling fits safely with your treatment.
