What point-of-care ultrasound is

Point-of-care ultrasound is a bedside imaging method that shows moving soft tissues in real time.

A clinician places a handheld probe on the skin with gel between the probe and the body. Sound waves are converted into images on a nearby screen. In orthopedics, the examination may focus on tendons, muscles, ligaments, joints, fluid collections, or the tissue around a painful area. The clinician can watch a structure while you move, tighten a muscle, or point to the exact site of tenderness.

How clinicians use it

The clinician first matches the scan with your symptoms, examination, and movement. The probe may be angled in several directions because a tendon or ligament can look different when viewed along its length or across it. A live image can also help the clinician select a safe path for a needle during an injection or aspiration when that procedure is appropriate.

Point-of-care ultrasound is often a focused examination rather than a complete survey of every body structure. It may be repeated during rehabilitation to observe movement or to reassess a specific concern.

What it cannot show well

Ultrasound does not pass through bone, so it cannot show the inside of a joint or the full structure of a bone. Air and deeper tissues can also limit the view. Image quality depends on the body region, your position, the equipment, and the operator’s technique. A focused bedside scan may not answer every question raised by pain, weakness, swelling, or an injury.

If the findings do not explain your symptoms, your clinician may combine them with an examination or another imaging method. A scan is one part of clinical decision-making, not a diagnosis in isolation.

Other ways to assess the area

Depending on the question, assessment may include an examination without imaging, an X-ray for bone detail, magnetic resonance imaging for deeper soft tissues, or a formal imaging appointment. The appropriate option depends on the body region, the suspected problem, and whether a procedure needs live guidance.

What the result means for you

A point-of-care scan can help your clinician connect a symptom with a visible structure and decide whether movement, exercise, monitoring, or a procedure fits your situation. It can also help distinguish a fluid-filled finding from a solid soft-tissue finding, but the image still needs to be interpreted alongside your history and examination.

If an injection is discussed, ask which structure is being targeted, what benefit is expected, and what alternatives are available. Safety and preparation

Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves and does not use ionizing radiation. The probe may feel firm over a tender area, but the scan itself does not require an incision. Tell the clinician if touching the area is very painful or if you have a wound or skin irritation there. For a scan linked to an injection or aspiration, the procedure has separate considerations that should be explained before consent.

Questions people ask

Do I need to prepare for point-of-care ultrasound?

Usually the area is simply made accessible, although preparation can vary by body region and the planned procedure.

Can ultrasound explain all orthopedic pain?

No. Bone, air, and deep structures can limit the view, so the result is interpreted with your symptoms and physical examination.
