What is MRI-guided focused ultrasound?

MRI-guided focused ultrasound uses MRI images to aim concentrated sound energy at selected tissue while treatment is monitored.

MRI-guided focused ultrasound combines magnetic resonance imaging with sound energy. MRI helps the care team locate and monitor tissue, while focused ultrasound delivers energy to a chosen target from outside the body. The energy can heat the target area, with the aim of changing selected tissue while nearby structures are monitored.

There is no camera inside the body and no surgical incision for the energy delivery itself. The treatment table and equipment are arranged so the target can be reached accurately through the body.

How it is used

Before treatment, MRI images help determine whether the target can be reached and whether nearby organs can be protected. During treatment, the equipment delivers a sequence of focused applications while MRI provides ongoing guidance and temperature information.

In gynaecological care, the approach may be discussed alongside treatment planning for uterine conditions. Uterine Artery Embolisation is another uterus-focused treatment, but it works by reducing blood flow through the uterine arteries rather than using focused sound energy.

Limits of the technology

Treatment is only suitable when the target can be reached through a safe path and the MRI view is adequate. Its usefulness may be affected by tissue position, intervening bowel or bone, movement, or the size and characteristics of the target. It may not remove tissue or provide a sample for laboratory diagnosis.

The treatment plan depends on the specific condition, symptoms, fertility goals, and previous care. A clinician may recommend another procedure when focused ultrasound cannot meet the treatment goal.

Another treatment option

Uterine Artery Embolisation uses small particles delivered through a blood vessel to reduce blood flow to selected uterine tissue. The choice between approaches depends on the diagnosis, anatomy, symptoms, pregnancy plans, and the risks discussed with your specialist.

What this may mean for you

You may spend time lying still while images are taken and treatment applications are delivered. Ask whether the aim is symptom relief, tissue change, or both; how the target was selected; and what follow-up imaging or appointments are planned. Tell the team promptly if you feel unexpected pain, heat, or discomfort during treatment.

Safety and preparation

Before an MRI-based procedure, report metal implants or fragments, implanted electronic devices, pregnancy possibility, allergies, and difficulty lying still. Follow instructions about medicines, eating, and clothing. Afterward, follow the service's advice about activity and contact them for symptoms that concern you.

Questions people ask

Is focused ultrasound the same as an MRI scan?

No. MRI provides images and monitoring; focused ultrasound supplies the treatment energy.

Can it take a tissue sample?

No. Focused ultrasound changes selected tissue but does not itself collect a laboratory sample.
