What is an Erbium YAG laser?

An Erbium YAG laser, also called Er:YAG, emits light that is strongly absorbed by water in the skin. Each pulse can vaporise a precisely controlled amount of surface tissue. By choosing the energy and treatment pattern, the clinician can make a lighter superficial pass or a deeper resurfacing treatment. The device is used for selected texture, surface, and scar concerns rather than every skin change.

How is it used?

The clinician examines the area, cleans it, and may apply topical or injected anaesthetic. Eye protection is placed before the laser handpiece delivers pulses in a planned pattern. Cooling and protective ointment can support comfort. The treatment may leave pinpoint openings or a raw, weeping surface, depending on depth. Erbium Laser Resurfacing describes the treatment setting in which this technology is commonly used.

What are its limits?

Resurfacing can improve a surface feature but cannot erase every scar, wrinkle, pore, or pigment change. Deeper concerns may need another approach, and improvement develops while the skin heals. Active infection, irritated skin, recent tanning, some medicines, or a history of raised scars may make treatment unsuitable or require postponement. A changing mole still needs assessment rather than cosmetic resurfacing.

What alternatives may be considered?

Options vary with the concern and can include gentle topical treatment, microneedling, a different laser, chemical peeling, surgery, camouflage, or no procedure. Less invasive choices may involve more gradual change; deeper procedures may involve more wound care. The clinician can compare the treatment depth with your recovery time and skin sensitivity.

What does this mean for a patient?

Plan for careful cleansing, ointment, and sun protection while the surface repairs. Ask whether makeup, shaving, exercise, or active skincare products should pause. Share any history of cold sores, eczema flares, pigment changes after injury, or medicines that affect healing. Arrange review if the treated area becomes increasingly painful instead of steadily calmer.

Safety and aftercare

Redness, swelling, warmth, peeling, crusting, and sensitivity are common parts of recovery, with intensity related to treatment depth. Infection, prolonged redness, pigment changes, scarring, and cold-sore reactivation can occur. Keep hands, fragrances, and unapproved products away from a healing surface. Contact the clinic for spreading redness, pus, fever, marked swelling, or eye symptoms.

Questions people ask

Is Er:YAG resurfacing superficial or deep?

It can be adjusted for different depths, so the plan depends on the concern, skin, and desired recovery.

Can I use my usual skincare after treatment?

Not necessarily. A clinician may pause irritating products until the surface has healed and then restart them gradually.
