AI Embryo Selection

AI embryo selection is software-assisted analysis of images and development records from embryos created during IVF. The system looks for patterns in the available images and produces an assessment that may help the embryology team organise or compare embryos. It supports clinical judgement; it does not read a baby's future health from an image.

Embryos are observed in the IVF laboratory and images may be captured over time. AI software analyses the permitted records and presents a score, ranking, or other aid for the embryology team. The team combines that output with embryo development, genetic testing when relevant, medical history, consent, and the plan for transfer or storage.

An algorithm can only assess the information it receives, and image quality or laboratory conditions can affect its output. Similar-looking embryos may have different genetic or developmental potential. An AI assessment cannot guarantee implantation, pregnancy, or a healthy birth, and it does not replace genetic counselling or a clinician's review.

Embryologists can assess embryo appearance and development without an AI tool. Time-lapse imaging may provide repeated observations, while genetic testing can answer a different question about selected chromosome or genetic findings. These approaches have different purposes and limitations and may be used separately or together.

The tool may help your team explain why one embryo is considered more suitable for transfer than another, but the recommendation remains a clinical decision. Ask what data were analysed, whether the result changes the planned treatment, and what uncertainty remains. The number or label assigned by software is not a diagnosis.

Ask how embryo images and identifying information are stored, who can access them, and whether you can decline the software assessment without affecting other parts of your care. Confirm whether the tool is an optional aid and how its output will be documented. Your fertility team should explain the laboratory process before you consent.
