What tiredness in pregnancy can feel like

Tiredness may feel like a heavy need to sleep, low physical energy, reduced concentration, or difficulty completing ordinary tasks. Some people feel drained after a normal activity; others notice that rest does not restore their energy as expected. Fatigue can change during pregnancy as sleep, appetite, emotions, and the body's workload change.

Tiredness in pregnancy is common, but persistent or marked fatigue can also need assessment for anaemia, thyroid problems, or vitamin deficiency.

Is tiredness in pregnancy urgent?

Tiredness alone is not usually an emergency. Contact your maternity team promptly if fatigue is severe, worsening, or comes with breathlessness at rest, fainting, chest pain, a racing heartbeat, heavy bleeding, severe headache, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or chest pain.

Possible causes

Pregnancy itself can increase the need for rest through hormonal changes, altered sleep, and the physical demands of supporting a growing baby. Fatigue may also occur with the following causes, listed alphabetically rather than by likelihood.

How tiredness in pregnancy is assessed

A clinician will ask when the tiredness began, how it affects daily life, how you sleep, what you eat, and whether you have bleeding, pain, breathlessness, mood changes, or other symptoms. They may review your pregnancy history, medicines, supplements, and any previous health conditions.

A blood test may check a full blood count and iron status. Depending on your symptoms and examination, testing may also assess thyroid function or vitamin levels. The results help separate expected pregnancy fatigue from a treatable medical cause.

Treatment depends on the cause

When tiredness reflects normal pregnancy changes, care focuses on regular meals, fluids, gentle movement, planned rest, and support with demanding tasks. Your clinician can tailor advice to your stage of pregnancy and overall health.

Anaemia may be treated with dietary advice and an iron supplement when testing supports it; see Iron Therapy for more detail. Thyroid problems may need prescribed thyroid medicine and follow-up blood tests. Vitamin D deficiency may be managed with a clinician-recommended supplement and dietary guidance. Do not start high-dose supplements without checking the product and dose with your maternity clinician.

Ways to protect your energy

Keep a regular sleep routine and make rest part of the day before you become exhausted. Eat balanced meals with protein and iron-containing foods, drink regularly, and choose gentle activity such as walking if your maternity team says it is suitable. Break chores into smaller tasks, accept practical help, and mention persistent fatigue at antenatal appointments so it is not overlooked.

Symptoms that may occur alongside fatigue

Notice whether tiredness comes with dizziness, headaches, breathlessness, palpitations, feeling cold, constipation, muscle aches, low mood, disturbed sleep, or reduced appetite. Recording when symptoms appear and what makes them better or worse can make an appointment more useful.

What to do next

If fatigue is affecting work, childcare, mobility, or self-care, arrange an antenatal review. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, describe your sleep and diet, and ask whether blood tests are appropriate. Prompt assessment can identify conditions that are manageable during pregnancy.

Questions people ask

Should I mention tiredness at an antenatal appointment?

Yes, especially if it persists, is worsening, or limits daily activities; your clinician can review sleep, nutrition, symptoms, and whether blood tests are useful.

Can I take an iron supplement for pregnancy fatigue?

Ask your maternity clinician first, because iron is helpful when deficiency or anaemia is present and the appropriate product depends on your results and health history.

When should fatigue be checked urgently?

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or rapidly worsening fatigue with fainting, breathlessness at rest, chest pain, heavy bleeding, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down.
