Live Attenuated Vaccine

A live attenuated vaccine uses a weakened form of a germ to help the immune system learn to recognise it.

The weakened germ can prompt an immune response without causing the usual illness in people whose immune systems are working normally. Immune cells remember features of the germ, so they can respond more quickly if exposure happens later.

This vaccine type is handled and given according to its specific product instructions. Some are injected, while others may be given by another route. The appointment team checks the product, storage, your health history and the recommended schedule before vaccination.

Live attenuated vaccine technology is used in selected prevention programmes. It may be part of chickenpox vaccination, childhood immunisation, MMR vaccination or yellow fever vaccination, depending on the vaccine product and the individual plan.

A clinician or vaccination service matches the vaccine to age, previous doses, travel plans and relevant medical information. The name of a disease does not by itself tell you which vaccine type will be offered.
