BCG Solution

BCG solution is a liquid containing weakened bacteria placed into the bladder to help treat some bladder cancers.

BCG stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin. In this setting, it is used as an immune-based treatment rather than as an ordinary vaccine. The solution is delivered through a thin catheter, so it can act directly on the bladder lining.

The weakened bacteria stimulate local immune activity in the bladder. Immune cells are drawn into the bladder lining and may attack abnormal cells that remain after a tumour has been removed. BCG is not a chemotherapy drug, and it is not usually given through a vein.

The prepared liquid is handled as a medical treatment. Your care team gives instructions about fluid intake, toilet use, and cleaning after treatment because the bladder contents need careful handling for a short period.

BCG solution is used for some non-muscle-invasive bladder cancers, particularly when the clinical team wants treatment to reduce the chance of abnormal cells returning or progressing. It is placed in the bladder after an individual assessment of the tumour and the bladder lining.

A session commonly involves emptying your bladder, catheter placement, instillation of the solution, and removal of the catheter. The solution may remain in the bladder for a planned period before you urinate it out. The exact schedule and number of sessions depend on your treatment plan.

The alternatives considered for bladder cancer depend on tumour features, previous treatment, bladder health, and your overall situation. They can include observation in selected cases, removal of visible tumour through the urinary passage, medicine placed into the bladder, or surgery that removes the bladder. During BCG treatment, burning when passing urine, urgency, frequent urination, tiredness, or a mild fever can occur. Tell the treatment team about symptoms before the next visit. A high or persistent fever, feeling suddenly very unwell, difficulty passing urine, or worsening pain needs prompt medical advice because infection or another significant reaction may need assessment.

Do not start, stop, or delay bladder medicines without checking with your clinician. Ask when to report symptoms and how to clean the toilet or manage urine after each instillation.

BCG is given in a planned course, with checks between treatments. A clinician may postpone an instillation if you have a urinary infection, visible blood in the urine, or another reason that makes catheter treatment unsuitable. The course can be adjusted if side effects are difficult to manage.
