Anthracycline Chemotherapy Drugs

Anthracyclines are medicines used in systemic cancer treatment. They travel through the bloodstream and act on cells that are dividing. Examples include doxorubicin and epirubicin, although the exact medicine depends on the treatment plan.

Anthracycline chemotherapy drugs damage cancer cells by interfering with processes needed for cell growth and division.

Anthracyclines can affect healthy fast-dividing cells as well as cancer cells. This helps explain temporary hair loss, mouth soreness, nausea, bowel changes, and reduced blood-cell counts during treatment. The medicines may be given into a vein, often as part of a combination regimen.

These drugs may be included in treatment plans for several blood cancers and solid tumours. Their role may be to shrink a tumour before local treatment, reduce the chance of cancer returning after surgery, or control cancer that has spread. The regimen, dose pattern, and combination medicines are selected for the specific cancer and your health.

Other chemotherapy medicines, targeted medicines, immunotherapy, hormone treatment, surgery, or radiotherapy may be options depending on the cancer. An alternative is not automatically equivalent: each option has a different target, schedule, expected benefit, and side-effect profile. Your oncology team can explain why an anthracycline is being considered and what other approaches fit your diagnosis.

Before each treatment, the team may review your symptoms, medicines, blood tests, and general health. Tell them promptly about fever, unusual bleeding, breathlessness, chest discomfort, severe vomiting, or pain, and mention any new medicine or supplement. Ask when side effects are expected, which contact number to use, and how to protect your mouth and energy during treatment.

Anthracyclines can affect the heart, so the team considers previous heart problems, other treatments, and the planned cumulative exposure. Heart function may be checked before or during treatment, and follow-up may continue after the course ends. The risk of late effects varies between people; report new breathlessness, ankle swelling, unusual fatigue, or a fast heartbeat.
