What the Testosterone test measures

What this test measures

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. It is made mostly in the testes, and in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands in both sexes. A total testosterone test measures free testosterone together with the testosterone bound to albumin and to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Free or bioavailable testosterone can be calculated or measured separately when a more precise picture is needed.

Who this test is commonly ordered for

Commonly ordered for

Doctors commonly order this test for men with reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, low mood or low bone density, for women with excess hair growth, acne, irregular periods or difficulty conceiving, for adolescent boys with delayed puberty, and as part of a male infertility assessment. Testosterone follows a daily rhythm and peaks in the early morning. A doctor can advise whether this test is appropriate for you and how often to repeat it.

  • Unilabs lists these prices on its ordering website, ae.unilabs.online. Its terms mention a service fee without stating the amount.
  • Smart Care Polyclinic in Deira lists these prices on its laboratory page and calls them list prices. The page offers 30% to 50% off when four or more tests are chosen, with the discounted price sent by the clinic; that discount is not in the prices shown here. The page does not state VAT.
  • Healthchecks360 is a booking platform that works through partner labs. Its terms say prices may vary from centre to centre, and its pages do not state VAT or a collection cost.
