What the PSA test measures

What this test measures

PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a protein made by cells of the prostate gland, measured in the blood in ng/mL. Most PSA in the blood is bound to other proteins and a small part circulates freely. A raised PSA can have causes other than cancer, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis. The ratio of free to total PSA can help to tell cancer from benign causes.

Who this test is commonly ordered for

Commonly ordered for

PSA screening is a shared decision between a patient and a doctor. Doctors commonly discuss or order PSA for men considering prostate screening, for men with a close relative who has had prostate cancer, and to monitor men who have or have had prostate cancer. A doctor can advise whether this test is appropriate for you and how often to repeat it.

  • DarDoc is a home collection service, and these are the prices its website lists test by test. The website also advertises a 20% coupon, which is not the price shown here. Zavis did not verify the total at checkout.
  • Healthchecks360 is a booking platform that works through partner labs. Its terms say prices may vary from centre to centre, and its pages do not state VAT or a collection cost.
