What this test measures
Liver function tests are a panel of blood tests that look at different aspects of liver health. ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase) are enzymes released into the blood when liver cells are damaged. ALP (alkaline phosphatase) and GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) are enzymes that rise when the flow of bile is blocked. Bilirubin is the yellow pigment produced when haemoglobin breaks down, and it is raised in jaundice. Albumin and total protein reflect how well the liver is making proteins.
