What this test measures
Kidney function tests assess how well the kidneys filter waste from the blood. Creatinine is a waste product of muscle activity that the kidneys clear, so its level rises as filtration falls. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is another waste product, and it is also affected by protein intake and hydration. eGFR, the estimated glomerular filtration rate, is calculated from creatinine, age and sex to give a standardised measure of filtration. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, bicarbonate and chloride reflect the kidneys' role in fluid and acid-base balance.
