VDH's 5-day measles exposure at Bon Secours tests UAE hospital isolation plans

Virginia Department of Health (VDH) said a measles patient created a 5-day exposure at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, giving UAE hospital leaders a clean drill scenario for triage, isolation and regulator reporting.

The audience with the most to gain is hospital COOs, medical directors and infection-control leads. For UAE operators, the takeaway is direct: a suspected measles case has to be identified before registration is complete, then routed through isolation, staff immunity checks and notification channels tied to Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DOH) or Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP).

What happened in Richmond

VDH said on 29 May 2026 that a patient linked to the Buckingham County outbreak created a potential exposure at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital, 5801 Bremo Road, between 20 May 2026 and 24 May 2026 until noon. VDH said Virginia had reported 64 measles cases in 2026 at the time of the notice.

The infection-control risk is narrow and costly. VDH says measles spreads through the air, can remain in the air for up to 2 hours after an infected person leaves, and requires exposed people to monitor symptoms for 21 days. VDH also tells exposed patients to call ahead before entering a clinic or emergency department, a step that depends on fast call-centre scripts and clear escalation rules.

UAE readiness signal

MOHAP launched the National Supplementary Measles Immunization Campaign 2024 on 31 October 2024 with Emirates Health Services, Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) and DHA. MOHAP said the campaign targets children aged 1 to 7 with an additional MMR booster dose.

ADPHC said on 10 February 2025 that more than 89,000 MMR doses were administered in 2024 to children aged 1 to 7 in Abu Dhabi. ADPHC said the vaccine was available at 64 facilities and health centres across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra.

Compliance questions for operators

DHA-regulated facilities in Dubai, DOH-regulated facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and MOHAP-regulated facilities in the Northern Emirates can use the Richmond case as a drill. The first measurable question is whether a suspected measles patient can be identified within 10 minutes of arrival. The second is whether exposed staff, patients and visitors can be listed within 24 hours.

DHA's healthcare professional screening and immunisation policy points facilities toward evidence of measles immunity through Measles-IgG antibody status. That matters to finance teams because staff exclusion after exposure can hit roster capacity faster than direct treatment cost. In a high-occupancy emergency department, one preventable exposure can affect clinic throughput, leave cover and patient communications in the same week.

MOHAP has set a national goal of 100% vaccination coverage among target groups by 2030.
