25-hour Nicola Valley ER closure tests UAE hospital staffing plans

What happened in Merritt

Interior Health said emergency services at Nicola Valley Hospital and Health Centre in Merritt, British Columbia, would be unavailable from 19 June 2026 to 20 June 2026, according to local reports by Radio NL and the Merritt Herald. Patients were directed to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, about 85 km away by road.

"Emergency services will be unavailable from 7 a.m., Friday, June 19 to 8 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2026," Interior Health said in a public notice.

Radio NL reported that Interior Health did not provide a reason for the closure. The same report said the 25-hour shutdown was the hospital's first emergency closure of 2026, after interruptions in 2024 and 2025 that local reporting linked to shortages of doctors and nurses.

The facility is small, which is part of the lesson. Interior Health lists Nicola Valley Hospital and Health Centre as having eight acute care inpatient beds and a 24/7 emergency department.
