Aster Mankhool tops 10,000 cath lab cases since 2018 as Dubai cardiac demand shifts younger

Aster Hospital Mankhool has crossed 10,000 cardiac catheterisation lab procedures since 2018, according to a Zawya report, putting a Dubai private hospital into a procedure-volume band that matters for operators, payers and referral clinics.

What Aster reported

The hospital said its cath lab has operated 24/7 since launch and has averaged more than 1,200 procedures a year from 2019 onward. It performed around 1,470 procedures in 2025 and expects about 1,600 procedures in 2026, according to the same report.

Aster said the lab covers coronary angiography, angioplasty, STEMI interventions, thrombectomy, atherectomy, optical coherence tomography, fractional flow reserve, stenting, TAVI/TAVR, MitraClip and pacemaker or ICD implantation. That range places the service beyond diagnostic angiograms and into structural heart and complex coronary work.

The patient mix is commercially relevant. An analysis of more than 6,000 patients found that over half were aged 31 to 50, while around 30% were aged 51 to 60. Data from more than 3,500 patients showed more than 90% were from South Asia, with Indian nationals accounting for more than 65%, followed by Pakistani and Filipino patients.

Why clinics and insurers should care

Dubai clinics that see chest pain, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidaemia need referral pathways that work outside office hours. The relevant regulator is the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). DHA's Standards for Interventional Cardiology Services, issued on 14 October 2021, apply to DHA-licensed general and specialty hospitals. The standard says providers with more than 500 procedures per year per cath lab should have an agreement with at least one nearby cath lab for elective referral and emergency continuity.

That threshold is the operational signal. Aster's reported 2025 volume is almost three times the DHA continuity trigger. Competing hospitals in Dubai should check whether cath lab downtime cover, biomedical engineering support, cardiac-surgeon access and emergency transfer agreements are current before marketing 24/7 cardiac intervention.

What patients and operators should do next

Patients should separate provider capability from insurance network status. A hospital may be licensed for cath lab work and still require payer approval for an elective angiogram, angioplasty or stent. In emergencies, hospitals can move first and reconcile cover later, but patients should ask for the procedure code, estimated self-pay exposure, stent policy and expected length of stay before an elective admission.

Clinic operators should audit three items this quarter: chest-pain triage protocol, transfer agreement with a DHA-, DOH- or MOHAP-licensed cath lab, and insurer pre-authorisation workflow for elective angiography. Medical directors should review whether high-risk South Asian male patients aged 31 to 50 are being screened early enough for diabetes, blood pressure, lipids and family history before the first emergency presentation.
