5 US doctor groups update flu and COVID vaccine advice, raising UAE clinic workflow questions

Five US medical societies have issued updated flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccine recommendations for the 2026-27 respiratory season, a move that UAE COOs, medical directors and finance teams should treat as a winter patient-communication issue.

What the US doctors said

Gulf Coast News and Weather carried the Associated Press report on 2 September 2026 that the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Infectious Diseases Society of America and American Medical Association moved to give clearer advice while US federal recommendations remain disputed.

The US groups continued to support broad annual influenza vaccination, including for people aged 6 months and above. Their COVID-19 advice is more complex. US federal approval for updated COVID-19 products has narrowed toward older adults and people with risk factors, while several doctors' groups still support wider access after clinician discussion.

"There has been a lot of confusion and chaos regarding vaccine recommendations," Dr. Sandra Fryhofer of the American Medical Association said, according to AP.

For UAE operators, the relevant point is the confusion, rather than the US politics. Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) and Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) rules determine local practice. US society guidance can support clinician counselling, but it should not replace emirate-specific eligibility, consent, procurement or reporting requirements.

Why UAE clinics and insurers should care

Dubai clinics should prepare for two patient groups in September to November: parents asking whether a child needs flu and COVID-19 vaccination before travel, and older adults asking whether high-dose flu vaccine is available. Dubai Health lists flu vaccination and COVID-19 vaccination among its vaccination services, and patients can book through Dubai Health channels where applicable.

Price transparency matters because respiratory vaccines often sit outside routine acute-care encounters. Published private-clinic tariffs in Dubai commonly place standard flu vaccination in the AED 79 to AED 350 range, with higher prices when consultation, home administration or high-dose products are included. Operators should verify their own DHA-approved tariff, insurer network rules and coding pathway before advertising a package.

• COOs should update triage scripts, consent forms, cold-chain logs and post-vaccine observation protocols before peak demand.
• CFOs should separate vaccine cost, consultation fee, nursing administration and home-visit charges in billing audits.
• Medical directors should brief physicians on how UAE guidance differs from US society statements.
• Insurers such as Daman, Thiqa and Sukoon should expect member queries on whether preventive flu shots, COVID-19 boosters and out-of-network vaccination are covered.

Abu Dhabi has the clearest operating instruction in the current public record. A DOH circular dated 1 October 2025 said Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supplied 2025-26 northern hemisphere trivalent influenza vaccine and high-dose trivalent vaccine for people aged 65 years and above. It also required healthcare providers to document influenza vaccine doses through the Immunization Information System and report suspected adverse events through the AEFI e-notification system.

Local operating checklist

MOHAP launched the UAE's 10th national seasonal influenza awareness campaign on 18 September 2025, with DHA, DOH, Emirates Health Services, Dubai Health and Sharjah Health Authority named as partners. The campaign ran until March 2026 and targeted high-risk groups, including older adults, pregnant women, people with chronic illness, children under five and healthcare workers.

For the northern emirates, Emirates Health Services lists preventive vaccination services, with seasonal influenza vaccination priced at AED 50 and vaccinations free for UAE nationals. Clinics in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah should confirm the current MOHAP or EHS channel before quoting a price to patients.

COVID-19 is less uniform in practice. The UAE official portal, updated on 28 November 2025, still describes vaccine and booster access for high-risk groups, including UAE citizens and domestic helpers, people above 50 years and patients with chronic disease. Private providers should check current DHA, DOH or MOHAP instructions before using US age cut-offs in patient materials.

The immediate action is operational. Build one respiratory-vaccine note in the EMR, with fields for age, pregnancy, chronic disease, prior vaccine date, insurer, consent and adverse-event reporting. Add one staff script that says US guidance may inform discussion, while UAE regulators decide eligibility and availability.

Patients with severe shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, dehydration or worsening symptoms after flu or COVID-19 should use licensed emergency care rather than a vaccination booking channel.
