The key difference in the experience
Loss of appetite is reduced desire to eat, whereas nausea is an unpleasant feeling that you may vomit.
You can have either symptom on its own or both together. Someone with nausea may still want food but find smells, movement or eating makes them feel sick. Someone with loss of appetite may have no queasy sensation and simply lack interest in food. The timing, triggers and ability to keep fluids down give a clinician more useful information than the label alone.
Loss of appetite may be the clearer description when
Food feels uninteresting, portions seem harder to finish, or you regularly skip meals without feeling as if you might vomit. Stress, pain, tiredness, changes in mood, infection and some medicines can all reduce interest in eating. Notice whether the change is brief or continuing, whether particular foods are easier to manage, and whether there are related changes such as altered taste, mouth pain, abdominal discomfort or trouble swallowing.
Nausea may be the clearer description when
There is a sick, unsettled sensation in the stomach or throat, possibly with salivation, sweating, retching or vomiting. It may come in waves or be brought on by motion, strong odours, a meal, pain, illness or a medicine. Record when it occurs and whether it is associated with headache, fever, diarrhoea, constipation, dizziness, pregnancy possibility or new treatment, because these details help narrow the cause.
When to seek urgent medical help
Seek urgent assessment for vomiting blood, material that looks like coffee grounds, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, chest pain, severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, fainting or breathing difficulty. Urgent care is also appropriate if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down, or if dehydration is developing, such as very little urine, marked dizziness or unusual drowsiness. These signs need assessment regardless of whether appetite is reduced.
Other eating-related symptoms
Early fullness, difficulty swallowing, pain on swallowing, heartburn, bloating and food avoidance are different experiences that can be mistaken for either symptom. For example, a person may want to eat but stop early because of discomfort, or avoid food because swallowing hurts. Feeling hungry but unable to eat due to mouth or dental pain is also different from low appetite. A clear description of what happens before, during and after eating can guide the next assessment.
How a clinician approaches the symptoms
The assessment starts with the onset, pattern, food and drink intake, vomiting, bowel changes, pain and other symptoms. A clinician may review medicines, examine the abdomen and consider whether hydration or another condition needs attention. Further tests are chosen based on those findings. While waiting for routine advice, take small sips of fluid if tolerated and choose simple foods only if they feel manageable; do not force food when nausea is intense.
Questions people ask
Can nausea cause loss of appetite?
Yes. When eating or food smells make you feel sick, you may naturally want less food. The symptoms can also arise separately, so describe both if they are present.
What should I mention if I arrange an appointment?
Mention when the symptoms began, whether you are vomiting, what you can drink, any abdominal pain or bowel changes, and every medicine or supplement you take.
