Growth Scan vs Induction of Labour

A growth scan gathers information about your baby's growth and wellbeing, while induction of labour is a treatment intended to start labour.

A growth scan may be appropriate when your maternity team wants more information about your baby's size or growth pattern, the amount of amniotic fluid, or blood flow through the placenta. It can also support monitoring when there are concerns about growth, blood pressure or another pregnancy finding. The scan provides information for a plan; it does not by itself decide the birth date.

Induction may be considered when there is a clinical reason to plan birth, such as pregnancy continuing beyond the advised timeframe, waters breaking without labour, or a maternal or fetal concern where birth is recommended. The team will assess your cervix, pregnancy history and baby's position before discussing the method and timing. This is a shared decision wherever circumstances allow.

A scan can have uncertainty because ultrasound estimates are not a direct weighing of the baby. A finding may lead to repeat monitoring or a discussion about birth, but the result needs to be interpreted with the whole pregnancy picture. Induction can involve a longer stay, stronger or more frequent contractions, and additional monitoring; sometimes the process does not lead to vaginal birth and another birth plan is discussed. Ask what the result means for you, what alternatives exist, and which symptoms should prompt urgent contact.

Sometimes the best plan is continued antenatal monitoring, a different ultrasound assessment, or review of a maternal condition rather than an immediate scan or induction. Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, severe headache, vision changes, severe abdominal pain or fluid loss. These symptoms need clinical assessment rather than a choice based on a comparison page.

The recommendation brings together gestational age, symptoms, blood pressure and other maternal findings, fetal movement, scan results, the cervix, baby's position and your preferences. The clinician should explain the reason for monitoring or birth, the proposed timing, pain-relief choices and what happens if induction does not progress. If you are unsure, ask which finding is driving the recommendation and how quickly the plan needs to happen.
