Compare what each symptom tells you

Fever is a raised body temperature, while a runny nose is fluid drainage from the nose.

Fever can bring feeling hot or cold, chills, sweating, fatigue, or a raised reading on a thermometer. Nasal drainage may be clear, watery, thick, or accompanied by sneezing and congestion. The symptoms often occur in the same respiratory illness, yet allergies and irritants can cause nasal drainage without fever. A temperature change can also occur without nasal symptoms.

Put fever first when you feel generally unwell

Choose fever as the main concern when chills, heat, sweating, body discomfort, or tiredness are affecting your overall wellbeing. A thermometer reading can help show the pattern, but how a person looks and behaves matters too. Record when symptoms began, fluid intake, urine output, and any cough, pain, rash, vomiting, diarrhoea, or urinary symptoms. Keep the room comfortable, offer fluids, and avoid piling on clothing or blankets when overheating is uncomfortable.

Put nasal symptoms first when drainage is the main problem

A runny nose is the better focus when sneezing, blockage, dripping, post-nasal drainage, or irritation around the nostrils is most troublesome and there is no significant general illness. Saline nasal spray or drops may ease dryness and help clear mucus. Avoid sharing tissues, wash hands after wiping the nose, and clean commonly touched surfaces when an infection is possible. Mention seasonal, dust, animal, fragrance, or workplace triggers if they repeatedly precede nasal symptoms.

Warning signs are more important than the label

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, a seizure, severe chest pain, a stiff neck, or inability to stay awake. Prompt assessment is appropriate for a fever with a new concerning rash, dehydration, persistent vomiting, severe headache, or a clear deterioration in wellbeing. Nasal symptoms need earlier review when there is swelling around the eyes, severe facial pain, a significant nose injury, repeated heavy bleeding, or a child is struggling to feed or breathe.

When the main issue is something else

Cough, sore throat, ear pain, wheeze, abdominal symptoms, or loss of smell may be more informative than either fever or nasal drainage. A blocked nose without fluid is not the same as a runny nose, although the symptoms may alternate. Repeated clear drainage triggered by an exposure can point the discussion toward allergies or irritation. If one symptom settles but another becomes more severe, update the description rather than assuming the same cause remains.

How a clinician approaches the choice

The clinical discussion usually covers the timeline, exposure to ill people or irritants, recent travel, medicines, allergies, existing conditions, and contact with vulnerable people. Examination may include temperature, oxygen level, hydration, throat, ears, nose, chest, and lymph nodes. The clinician may recommend symptom care, tests, or treatment based on the complete pattern. Bring temperature records and explain what makes nasal symptoms better or worse.

Questions people ask

Can a runny nose occur without fever?

Yes. Allergies, irritants, and some mild infections can cause nasal drainage without a raised temperature. Persistent or recurrent symptoms are worth discussing with a clinician.

Does coloured nasal mucus alone tell me how serious the illness is?

No. Mucus colour can change during nasal inflammation. Breathing problems, facial swelling, severe pain, fever pattern, and overall deterioration are more useful reasons to seek assessment.
