Fever vs Headache

Fever is about body temperature and may be accompanied by chills, sweating, aching, or fatigue. A headache is discomfort in the head or nearby areas, which may feel tight, throbbing, sharp, or pressure-like.

Fever is a rise in body temperature, while a headache is pain or pressure in the head, face, or upper neck.

Fever is the better description when an elevated temperature or repeated feverish episodes are the main concern. Note how it was measured, whether you have chills or sweats, and whether there are respiratory, urinary, skin, bowel, or other symptoms.

Rest, fluids, and a comfortable environment may help you feel better. Take medicines only as directed on the label or by a clinician, and account for any other products that contain the same ingredient.

Choose headache when pain or pressure is the main problem, even if you feel warm or tired as well. Describe where it is, how it began, its intensity, whether it is new for you, and whether light, noise, movement, coughing, or position changes it.

Also mention nausea, vomiting, visual changes, dizziness, weakness, numbness, jaw pain, sinus symptoms, neck pain, recent injury, and changes in sleep, caffeine, or meals. These details point the assessment in different directions.

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, headache after a head injury, fever with a stiff neck, confusion, seizure, fainting, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, a new vision problem, or a rash that appears with severe illness.

Get prompt advice if fever persists or returns, if headache is worsening or repeatedly interrupts daily activities, or if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems may need earlier assessment.

A migraine-type episode, facial pain, neck pain, dizziness, dehydration, or heat-related illness may need its own description rather than being called only fever or headache. If your main concern is a measured temperature, say that; if it is pain, explain the location and onset.

Fever and headache can have the same trigger, but neither tells you the cause on its own. The associated symptoms and change over time are usually more informative than a single label.

Assessment commonly starts with timing, temperature readings, pain pattern, recent illness or injury, medicines, hydration, and associated symptoms. A clinician may check vital signs, examine the nervous system, head and neck, and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
