Amniocentesis vs NIPT

Amniocentesis is an invasive diagnostic test, while NIPT is a blood-based screening test.

Amniocentesis examines amniotic fluid obtained during an invasive procedure. NIPT analyses fragments of placental DNA in a pregnant person’s blood. NIPT can help estimate the chance of selected chromosome conditions; amniocentesis can provide diagnostic information for conditions the laboratory is testing.

Amniocentesis may be discussed when you need diagnostic clarification after screening, an ultrasound finding, or a known family or pregnancy concern. It can be useful when the result may guide decisions about pregnancy care. The specific laboratory tests requested matter, so ask what the sample will assess and when the result may be available.

NIPT may be considered when you want non-invasive screening for selected chromosome conditions. It requires a blood draw and does not involve entering the uterus. A result showing an increased chance is not a diagnosis; your clinician may offer genetic counselling, ultrasound review, and an invasive diagnostic test.

NIPT avoids the procedure-related risks of amniocentesis, but it can return a result that is unavailable, unclear, or inaccurate for the condition being screened. Amniocentesis can cause cramping, spotting, infection, or pregnancy loss because it is invasive. Neither test assesses every birth condition, and a normal result cannot rule out all future health needs.

You may choose routine ultrasound and other pregnancy screening, or pause for counselling, when you are not seeking either screening or invasive diagnosis. If a result would not change your care or decisions, that is useful context for the discussion. Your team can also explain what information is available without testing.

Clinicians consider gestational age, medical and family history, ultrasound findings, the condition of concern, your preference for screening or diagnosis, and how you would use the result. Ask what a positive, negative, or no-result report would mean, and what confirmatory step would follow an increased-chance NIPT result.
