Zyrtec for Itchy Skin: What to Know

Zyrtec contains cetirizine, an antihistamine that blocks histamine signals involved in itch. It can be helpful when itching accompanies hives or another histamine-sensitive reaction. It may provide little relief when the itch comes from dry skin, eczema inflammation, a fungal or yeast infection, scabies, psoriasis, or a medication reaction. The appearance of the skin, where the itch occurs, whether others are itching, and how long it has lasted all help guide the diagnosis.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, faintness, throat tightness, or swelling of the tongue or lips. Arrange prompt assessment for a rapidly spreading rash, painful skin, blisters, fever, pus, or itching that prevents sleep. A clinician should also review unexplained itch that persists, returns frequently, or affects much of the body, especially after a new medicine.
