Zyrtec and dementia: what to know

Zyrtec contains cetirizine, an antihistamine used for allergy symptoms such as itching, hives, sneezing, or a runny nose. Some people feel drowsy or less alert after taking it. For a person living with Dementia, a change in sleepiness, balance, attention, or confusion can make everyday tasks and communication more difficult.

Memory Problems are a common feature of dementia, but a sudden change from a person’s usual thinking or behaviour needs assessment. Infection, dehydration, pain, constipation, poor sleep, or a medicine effect can contribute to an abrupt change, and it should not automatically be attributed to dementia.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician to check the complete medicine list before starting Zyrtec, including sleep aids, pain medicines, bladder medicines, and non-prescription cold remedies. Use the product only as directed. A carer can note when a dose is taken and watch for increased sleepiness, unsteadiness, agitation, or reduced appetite.

Keep medicines in their original labelled packaging and avoid adding more than one new product at a time unless a clinician has advised it.
