Zyrtec and antibiotics: what to know

Zyrtec is the brand name for cetirizine, an antihistamine used for allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, hives, or a runny nose. An antibiotic is prescribed for a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection; it does not treat allergy symptoms. Taking both may therefore be reasonable when a person has an infection and separate allergy symptoms, but the combination does not make the antibiotic work better.

Drowsiness can occur with cetirizine. Illness, dehydration, alcohol, or other medicines that make you sleepy can make it harder to notice this effect. Check the medicine label and tell the prescriber or pharmacist about every prescription medicine, non-prescription product, vitamin, and herbal remedy you use.

Take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed and do not save leftover doses for another illness. Use Zyrtec only as directed on its label or by your clinician. If it makes you sleepy or less alert, avoid driving, operating machinery, or drinking alcohol until you know how you respond. A pharmacist can check the specific antibiotic and your other medicines, including products for sleep, pain, or cold symptoms.

If you are being treated for a condition such as Cellulitis, follow the treatment plan and any wound-care advice given by your clinician. A rash that begins after an antibiotic needs assessment because it may be an allergy, an infection-related rash, or another cause.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash. These symptoms can occur with a serious allergic reaction. Contact the prescribing clinician promptly for severe diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or symptoms that are worsening instead of improving during treatment.

Ask whether your exact antibiotic has a known interaction with cetirizine, whether your symptoms could be a medicine reaction, and which symptom medicines are suitable for you. If you have kidney or liver problems, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, ask for personalised medicine advice.
