Zoster is another name for shingles, an illness related to reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. Inactivated vaccines do not contain a live virus that can reproduce in the body. Instead, they use a non-replicating ingredient designed to prompt an immune response. This distinction is useful when a clinician is considering vaccination for someone with a medical condition or medicines that affect the immune system.
