Zinc oxide for nappy rash: what to know

Nappy rash is often worsened by dampness, urine, stool, rubbing, and the warm enclosed environment of a nappy. Zinc oxide sits on the skin surface and helps separate irritated skin from these triggers. It does not work by correcting a zinc deficiency, and it does not treat every rash that appears in the nappy area.

Rash in the folds, a sharply red appearance, small surrounding spots, crusting, blisters, or repeated flare-ups can suggest a different contributor. Yeast, infection, contact irritation, and other skin conditions may need different care. Do not diagnose the cause from colour alone.

Change nappies regularly, rinse or cleanse gently, and pat the area dry. Apply a thin, even coating of zinc oxide as directed on the product label, particularly over skin exposed to moisture. Avoid vigorous rubbing, fragranced products, and harsh soaps. Let the skin breathe during changes when practical.

If barrier care is not enough, a clinician may suggest Emollient Therapy or assess whether Topical Antifungal Treatment is appropriate. Avoid applying multiple medicated products at once unless a healthcare professional has explained the plan, because extra layers can obscure the rash and irritate skin.

Arrange medical advice if the rash spreads, becomes very painful, cracks, bleeds, blisters, oozes, or fails to improve with gentle care. Prompt assessment is needed if the child has fever, seems unusually sleepy, feeds poorly, or has fewer wet nappies. Ask for earlier advice when the child is very young or the rash keeps returning.

Ask whether the rash looks like simple irritant dermatitis, how thickly to apply zinc oxide, and which products to avoid. Check what signs would suggest yeast or infection and when the child should be examined again.
