The nail sits in the hollow centre of a bone, commonly the thighbone or shinbone. Locking screws at one or both ends help control rotation and length. The implant acts as an internal splint, allowing the surrounding tissues to remain relatively undisturbed compared with some plate procedures. Your operation may be described as fracture fixation surgery. An intramedullary nail can also be used in selected hip fracture or limb-lengthening procedures, but those operations have different goals and aftercare.
