What can Zika virus spread through?

Pregnancy changes the importance of possible exposure because infection can cross to the developing baby. This does not mean every illness after travel is Zika; it means the timing, destination, symptoms, and pregnancy status should be reviewed carefully.

Apply mosquito repellent according to its label, wear covering clothing, and use screened or air-conditioned indoor spaces where available. Reduce standing water around your lodging, including in uncovered containers. After possible exposure, discuss condom use or avoiding sex with a clinician if pregnancy could be involved.

If you become unwell, avoid further mosquito bites while arranging advice, since this reduces opportunities for mosquitoes to feed on you.

Seek medical advice after relevant travel if you develop a rash, fever, headache, red eyes, or new joint aches. Contact your maternity care team promptly for possible exposure during pregnancy. Emergency assessment is appropriate for severe headache with confusion, fainting, breathing trouble, bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration.
