What transmits Zika virus?

The virus moves through a bite: a mosquito feeds on a person with Zika and can later pass the virus when it bites someone else. Aedes mosquitoes are distinctive because exposure can happen while people are active outdoors in the day, not only overnight. Their breeding sites may include small collections of standing water near homes or temporary accommodation.

Transmission through sex means a partner can pass the virus without feeling ill. A pregnant person with Zika can transmit infection to the developing baby, which is why possible exposure needs careful medical discussion in pregnancy.

Use repellent as directed, choose long sleeves and trousers when practical, and keep windows screened or closed where possible. Empty or cover water-holding containers near where you are staying. If you have travelled to an area with possible Zika transmission, use barrier protection or avoid sex in line with individual clinical advice.

Keep a brief record of destinations, travel dates, symptoms, and relevant mosquito exposure; this gives a GP a clearer starting point.

Book medical advice for a new rash, fever, red eyes, joint pain, or headache after relevant travel. Speak to a clinician promptly if pregnancy, conception planning, or a pregnant partner is involved. Get urgent help for serious symptoms such as confusion, collapse, severe dehydration, bleeding, or breathing problems.

Ask whether your travel history suggests a need for testing, what mosquito precautions fit your plans, and whether another travel-related illness should be considered. Ask for specific sexual and pregnancy guidance that applies to you and your partner.
