What should you know about the mosquito that causes Zika?

A mosquito spreads Zika after biting a person with the virus and later biting another person. Aedes mosquitoes often bite during the day as well as around dawn and dusk, so protection is useful throughout the day. They commonly breed in small collections of standing water around homes and accommodation. Zika can also be passed through sex, which means a mosquito bite is not the only possible route of exposure.

Use an insect repellent as directed on its label, wear clothing that covers arms and legs when practical, and use window screens, closed doors or air conditioning. Empty, cover or remove containers that collect water around where you are staying, such as plant trays and buckets. Use a bed net if the sleeping area is open to mosquitoes. These measures are useful on trips and in areas where Aedes mosquitoes are established.

Speak with a clinician after possible exposure if you develop fever, rash, red eyes, headache or joint discomfort, particularly after travel. Arrange prompt advice if you are pregnant, considering pregnancy or have a partner who may have been exposed. Seek urgent care for severe headache, confusion, weakness, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, unusual bleeding or dehydration. Mention your travel locations and dates.
