Zika symptoms

Many people with Zika have no noticeable illness. Those who do become unwell may develop a mild fever, a blotchy rash, aching joints, red eyes, headache, or muscle pain. The combination and intensity differ between people, and these signs also occur with other infections.

Symptoms after travel do not establish that Zika is the cause. Exposure history matters: where you travelled, mosquito bites, and sexual contact with someone who may have been exposed can help a clinician judge whether Zika is a consideration.

Rest, drink fluids, and arrange medical advice if symptoms follow travel to an area where Zika may be present. Tell the clinician when symptoms began and list all countries or areas visited. Mention pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, or a partner’s pregnancy, as these change the urgency of tailored advice.

Use measures to prevent mosquito bites while you are unwell or after a possible exposure, especially if you are travelling. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on symptom relief that suits your health history; avoid assuming every fever is Zika.

Get urgent medical help for severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, new weakness, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or severe dehydration. Seek prompt advice for fever or rash in pregnancy after relevant travel or exposure. These symptoms need assessment because several conditions may require treatment.
